ABOUT US

At Khel Khel Mein we facilitate holistic development among vulnerable youth through structured sports to overcome adversity & flourish in a fast-changing world. Our vision is to foster a culture of sports across communities India where children play, perform, prosper. Over the years we have reached over 10,000 children across Delhi through all our programs.

    PROBLEM STATEMENT

Traditionally schools have annual sports days and at a district or state level there are school wise championships which provide sporting exposure for children. When we as a society talk about sports, we talk about sports stars, medals and trophies and Olympic glory. But ironically, our total medals tally in the Olympics is 28 in 34 appearances averaging less than a medal per appearance. The challenges are deep-rooted and our narrow outlook as a society towards physical education as competitive accomplishments has exacerbated that.
A recent study done by Active Healthy Kids revealed that approximately 15 per cent of children (from a sample size of 3.8 million children and youth) met recommended standards of minimum fitness. It also notes that only one-third of children and youth are accumulating the minimum recommendation of 60 minutes MVPA (Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity) per day. So it is a paradox that we have a competitive performance centric approach and the levels of minimum fitness, participation, achievements are not promising.

Children/Youth need constructive involvement directed towards fitness and learning through sports to focus their scattered energies in a positive and productive direction for a better future. There is thus, a major need for long term interventions with children at a young age focusing on their overall health development. The need is to bridge the participation and performance outlook which are deeply interconnected. Based on our Khel Khel Mein Foundation (KKMF) experience in working across schools and communities in Delhi since 2014, there are three key aspects which need to be addressed:

      • In today’s scenario health is a major concern especially in disadvantaged communities. The World Health Organization defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
      • There is a need to sensitize parents / adults about positive health development including mental health and proper nutrition habits during crucial stages of development.
      • Sports being one of the best forms of constructive engagement not only ensures physical fitness, but also helps in the overall development of analytical abilities, team work, etc.
